The University of Waikato (Te Whare Wananga o Waikato) is a research-intensive public university in New Zealand, founded in 1964. It has its main campuses in Hamilton and Tauranga, with an international partnership location in Hangzhou, China.

1. Waikato reaches #293 globally in QS 2027

The University's latest QS result places Waikato at #293 equal globally, maintaining its position in the global top 1.5%. The University also ranks second in New Zealand for research impact.

2. New delivery-mode framework from 2027

One of the most important changes for future international students is Waikato's move to three clearer study modes:

In-person | Hybrid | Online

The University is discontinuing the Dual delivery label for new delivery descriptions from 2027.

3. Strong 2026 enrolment growth

In March 2026, Waikato reported that overall onshore EFTS were 4% higher than at the same point in 2025. The University also reported another record school-leaver cohort, 6.4% larger than the previous year's record cohort.

4. International numbers remain strong

The University reported strong international enrolments across both Hamilton and Tauranga campuses as part of its 2026 growth.

5. 2027 study options and fees published

Waikato has begun publishing its 2027 study information and indicative international tuition fees. For example, 2027 estimated fees include approximately:

6. NCUK pathway expansion

Waikato offers NCUK pathways with guaranteed bursaries of up to NZ$15,000 for eligible students progressing to selected Waikato degrees.

The current pathway structure includes:

• International Foundation Year ? Year 1 of eligible bachelor's degrees
• International Year One ? selected Year 2 progression routes.

7. New international scholarship opportunities

The Vice-Chancellor's International Excellence Scholarship remains available with awards of up to NZ$15,000, while the University of Waikato College has additional 2026–27 pathway scholarships of up to NZ$4,000.

8. College pathway changes

The University of Waikato College has updated its programme portfolio. From 2026 there are no new enrolments into the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English, although approved pathway offers into that qualification will be honoured.

Scholarship

1. Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship – General

This is one of Waikato’s main merit-based scholarships for international students.

Scholarship value

• Undergraduate: up to NZD 15,000 toward tuition fees.
• Postgraduate: up to NZD 10,000 toward tuition fees.
• It is a tuition-fee credit rather than a general cash allowance.
• The scholarship is intended for students demonstrating excellent academic achievement. 

Who can apply?

Applicants must generally:

• Be a new international student at the University of Waikato.
• Apply for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study.
• Hold a conditional or unconditional Offer of Place.
• Have a minimum GPA equivalent to B+ in the qualification used for admission.
• Be applying for an eligible programme.

Important exclusions

Applicants are generally not eligible if they:

• Are already enrolled at Waikato or Waikato College.
• Have already paid tuition fees.
• Have already applied for their New Zealand student visa at the time of scholarship application.
• Are coming through a sponsoring organisation, guaranteed-credit arrangement, study-abroad or exchange agreement.
• Are entering certain limited-place programmes.
• Are entering postgraduate teaching programmes such as the Master of Teaching and Learning.

2. Receive a conditional or unconditional Offer of Place.
3. Create/access your MyWaikato account.
4. Go to the Scholarships tab.
5. Select the relevant VC International Excellence Scholarship.
6. Submit the scholarship application before the applicable deadline.

2. Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship for India

This is particularly important for Indian students.

Value

• Undergraduate: up to NZD 15,000.
• Postgraduate: up to NZD 10,000.
• Applied toward tuition fees. 

Eligibility

The 2026 regulations specify that applicants must:

• Be a citizen or permanent resident of India.
• Be applying as a new international student.
• Intend to enrol full-time.
• Be entering an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
• Have a conditional or unconditional Offer of Place.
• Have at least a B+ equivalent GPA in the qualification used for admission.

Important timing condition

An applicant should apply before paying tuition fees or applying for a visa. The 2026 regulations specify offshore deadlines of:

• 30 November – A Trimester
• 15 May – B Trimester
• 31 August – C Trimester

3. Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship for China

This scholarship follows a similar structure.

• Up to NZD 15,000 for undergraduate study.
• Up to NZD 10,000 for postgraduate study.

Eligibility

Applicants generally need to:

• Be a citizen or permanent resident of China.
• Be a new international student.
• Apply for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study.
• Have an Offer of Place.
• Demonstrate at least B+ equivalent academic performance.

4. Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship – South-East Asia

This scholarship is specifically available to citizens of:

• Cambodia
• Indonesia

• Myanmar/Burma
• Philippines

5. Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship – Pacific

From 2026, Waikato has a separate Pacific scholarship.

6. University of Waikato International Entrance Scholarship for School Leavers

This is a separate opportunity for international students who complete secondary school in New Zealand.

Value

Up to NZD 15,000 toward tuition fees.

For the latest 2027 information:

• NCEA Level 3 Excellence: NZD 15,000
• NCEA Level 3 Merit: NZD 13,000
• Other qualifying achievement: NZD 10,000 

Eligibility

It is intended for international students who:

• Complete Year 13 at a New Zealand high school.
• Meet the relevant NCEA/entry requirements.
• Intend to enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree at Waikato.

7. New Zealand Excellence Awards – India

This is particularly relevant for Indian students because it is an Education New Zealand/Manapou ki te Ao initiative rather than a standard Waikato-only scholarship.

Value

NZD 7,500–15,000.

Undergraduate eligibility

The Waikato page specifies:

• Average of 75% across the best four academic subjects in ISC/AISSC and selected state boards, with minimum 60% in English; or
• Average of 80% across the best four academic subjects for other state boards, with minimum 65% in English. ?

Postgraduate eligibility

Applicants generally need:

• A recognised bachelor's degree.
• B-/B equivalent average.
• B/B+ equivalent in a relevant subject where required.
• IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, or equivalent. 

Application

The Waikato page currently states “No application required” and directs students to Education New Zealand for application/further details. Closing dates are determined by Education New Zealand.

8. New Zealand NCUK University of Waikato Bursary

This is an important pathway-based funding option.

Value

Up to NZD 15,000 toward tuition fees.

Eligibility

It is for eligible NCUK graduates progressing to degree-level study at Waikato.

The University states that:

• An unlimited number of bursaries are available to eligible NCUK graduates.
• No separate application is required.
• The bursary is applied to tuition fees.
• Students must be able to commence their Waikato studies face-to-face in New Zealand.
• It does not apply if the student begins the Waikato programme online. 

The current NCUK pathway information also shows:

• International Foundation Year ? up to NZD 15,000 bursary.
• International Year One ? up to NZD 10,000 bursary.

9. University of Waikato College International Pathway Scholarship

Value

NZD 2,500 toward tuition fees.

Who is it for?

International fee-paying students who:

• Undertake an eligible programme at University of Waikato College.
• Successfully complete the eligible pathway.
• Progress into a degree programme at the University of Waikato.

Application

No separate application is required.

The award is automatically applied to eligible students' tuition fees, and the University states that the award may be made up to eight weeks after the relevant College papers have started.

10. China Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarship

This is one of Waikato's strongest funding options, but it is specifically for Chinese PhD students.

Value

• University of Waikato tuition fees covered for up to 48 months.
• Living allowance provided by the China Scholarship Council.
• Doctoral support through Waikato. 

Waikato says it supports up to 20 new CSC PhD scholars per year.

Eligibility

Applicants need to:

• Be eligible under the China Scholarship Council requirements.
• Gain admission to a PhD at the University of Waikato.
• Meet the relevant CSC and Waikato doctoral requirements.

11. University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship

This is an important opportunity for international students already progressing through the New Zealand higher-education system.

Value

Up to NZD 15,000.

Eligibility

Applicants must generally:

• Be enrolled or intending to enrol full-time in their first master's degree.
• Undertake a qualifying 90- or 120-point master's thesis.
• Have contact with a potential Waikato thesis supervisor.
• Meet the academic/selection requirements.

12. University of Waikato Taught Postgraduate Scholarship

Value

Up to NZD 3,000.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Be undertaking at least one qualifying 500-level or higher taught paper.
• Apply before commencement of the papers for which funding is sought.
• Have at least an A- GPA.
• International students must have completed at least 120 points at a New Zealand university.

13. Huy Tien Vu Scholarship

Value

NZD 5,000.

Target students

This scholarship supports exceptional international students or students from an international refugee background who are:

• Studying in the Waikato Management School.
• In Year 3 or above of an undergraduate degree.
• Actively involved in the University community.

14. A Zulauf Trust Scholarship

This is a specialist opportunity for mathematics/statistics-related postgraduate research.

Value

Up to five scholarships are awarded annually, with a combined value of NZD 65,000.

Eligibility

It is open to domestic and international students who:

• Are currently enrolled full-time at Waikato.
• Are undertaking postgraduate study with a research component in mathematics or statistics.
• Have at least a B+ average in their most recent undergraduate degree.
• Can demonstrate commitment to mathematics and its further study.
