Programme Structure and Subjects / Topics

The PhD is entirely research-based and does not have a standard set of compulsory coursework subjects.

The principal structure is:

1. Initial/conditional enrolment.
2. Development of a detailed research proposal.
3. Confirmation of enrolment.
4. Independent research under a supervisory panel.
5. Ongoing six-monthly progress reporting.
6. Thesis preparation and submission.
7. External examination.
8. Oral examination.
9. Final decision on the award of the PhD.

Confirmation of enrolment

For full-time candidates, initial enrolment is conditional for six months.

Confirmation requires:

• A research proposal.
• Presentation of the proposed research to a confirmation panel.
• A well-defined research question or hypothesis.
• An appropriate research plan.
• Evidence of ethical approval, or confirmation that ethics approval is not required.
• A recommendation from the confirmation panel and relevant academic/supervisory staff.

If full-time enrolment is not confirmed within nine months of initial enrolment, the enrolment will be terminated under the current regulations.

Thesis formats

Depending on the research area and approval, the PhD thesis may be presented as:

• Traditional monograph.
• PhD with Publication, incorporating published or publishable papers.
• PhD with a Creative Practice Component, integrating creative outputs with scholarly research.

New doctoral application process

The University has recently changed its application process.

The current sequence is:

1. Check PhD eligibility.
2. Identify a suitable research topic/project.
3. Find a potential University of Waikato supervisor.
4. Obtain the supervisor's agreement.
5. Receive an Invitation to Apply.
6. Prepare the required application documents.
7. Submit the Application to Enrol.
8. Provide two academic referees.
9. Apply separately for doctoral scholarships if eligible.

International Student Visa Requirements

International students who intend to reside in New Zealand for their PhD will generally require an appropriate New Zealand student visa unless they hold another status that permits the study.

The Fee Paying Student Visa requires, among other things:

• An offer of place from an approved education provider.
• Sufficient funds to pay tuition fees, or an acceptable scholarship arrangement.
• Sufficient funds for living expenses or an acceptable sponsor.
• Acceptable medical and travel insurance.
• Satisfactory health and character requirements.
• A genuine reason for coming to New Zealand to study.
• Evidence that the student can leave New Zealand at the end of the stay.

Living-funds requirement

For tertiary study lasting one year or longer, Immigration New Zealand currently requires evidence of:

• NZD 20,000 for each year of study for living expenses.

This is separate from tuition fees.

Visa duration

The Fee Paying Student Visa can be granted for up to 4 years, although the actual visa period depends on the student's circumstances, study period and fees paid.

Insurance

Students must declare that they will hold acceptable medical and travel insurance for their stay.

Work rights

Depending on the conditions attached to the individual student visa, eligible students may work:

• Up to 25 hours per week while studying.
• Full-time during permitted holidays or scheduled breaks.
