Certificate of University Preparation
Why Study / Key Benefits
The Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) is a one-trimester pathway programme designed for students who do not meet normal University Entrance requirements or who need additional academic preparation before starting a bachelor's degree. The programme develops academic confidence, study habits, critical thinking, research, academic writing and independent-learning skills. Successful completion provides the equivalent of University Entrance and prepares students to progress into undergraduate study.
Key benefits include:
- Provides a pathway into degree-level study for students who do not currently meet University Entrance requirements.
- Develops academic writing, research, note-taking, time-management and critical-thinking skills.
- Introduces students to a tertiary learning environment through classes, assessments, tutorials and independent study.
- Allows students to select elective papers aligned with areas such as business, arts, social sciences, health, mathematics, biology and science.
- Successful completion can provide entry to a wide range of University of Waikato bachelor's degrees, subject to the destination degree's additional requirements.
- The University states that CUP can also provide the equivalent of University Entrance.

Latest Updates / Special Requirements
The current 2027 University information confirms that CUP remains an active three-intake pathway programme. The latest programme page now explicitly lists an international tuition fee of NZD 14,746, which is important because older University information described CUP primarily as a domestic bridging programme.
The University has also expanded the current CUP programme page to list Tauranga as an available location for Trimester A, whereas Hamilton remains the principal location.
Current special requirements include:
- Applications are assessed case-by-case.
- Applicants should provide a personal statement.
- Applicants must satisfy the applicable academic entry requirements.
- The programme consists of two compulsory and two elective papers.
- Students normally complete the programme within one academic year.
- Part-time study requires approval.
- Not every elective is necessarily offered in every trimester.
