It combines taught doctoral-level study with supervised independent research, allowing students to connect research directly with their professional practice.
Key benefits include:
- Develop advanced research skills and the ability to investigate significant issues in education.
- Apply research and academic knowledge directly to professional educational settings.
- Build expertise in education policy, practice, leadership, research methodologies and educational transformation.
- Produce original, applied research that contributes substantially to the chosen research area.
- Develop the confidence to present and defend research in academic and professional forums.
- The EdD has the same doctoral status as a PhD, while being specifically oriented toward professional educational practice.
- Waikato's Education discipline is ranked among the top 250 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings for Education, while the University itself is ranked equal 293rd globally in QS 2027, placing it in the top 1.5% worldwide.
Programme Structure and Subjects / Topics
The EdD is divided into two parts.
Part 1 β Coursework
Students complete 120 points of advanced education/research coursework.
Compulsory papers:

Part 2 β Doctoral Research
EDUCA994 β EdD Thesis β 120 points.
Students undertake approved and supervised independent research into a topic connected with their educational practice. The research must critically investigate a significant approved topic, demonstrate advanced research and scholarship, show intellectual independence, and make a substantial original contribution to the research area.
Before moving to Part 2, students must successfully complete all Part 1 requirements to the prescribed standard. They must then obtain approval for their research proposal, present their proposed research to a confirmation-of-enrolment panel, address research ethics requirements, and receive recommendations from their supervisors and relevant academic leadership.
Disciplines / Specialisations
The EdD does not list fixed majors or formal specialisations.
Instead, students develop an individual research focus within Education, based on their professional practice and approved research proposal.
The programme allows exploration of areas such as:
- Education policy

Latest Updates / Special Requirements
The most important current points for international applicants are:
- The 2027 Education subject regulations are now available and show the EdD papers as online offerings.
- The University has recently changed its doctoral application process. Applicants must identify a potential supervisor, obtain an Invitation to Apply, and then submit the formal Application to Enrol. Without an Invitation to Apply, the application will not be considered.
- Part 2 requires formal confirmation before the candidate can proceed with the thesis. This includes an acceptable research proposal, research presentation, ethics approval or confirmation that ethics approval is not required, and recommendations from the supervisory and academic teams.
- A minimum of two supervisors is required for Part 2, with at least one being a continuing University of Waikato staff member who acts as chief supervisor.
- Candidates must maintain continuous enrolment throughout the EdD and submit six-monthly research progress reports after entering Part 2.
- The University states that EdD applications can be made at any time of year, but the availability of supervision and formal application process must be considered.
- Applicants should carefully distinguish the EdD from the PhD: the EdD is specifically designed for experienced education practitioners and combines coursework with professional applied research.
International Student Visa Requirements
If an international student intends to travel to New Zealand to undertake study, the appropriate student visa requirements apply. If the student's EdD is completed entirely from outside New Zealand without travelling to New Zealand for study, a New Zealand student visa would generally not be required; students should confirm their individual circumstances with Immigration New Zealand.
For study in New Zealand, the principal option is the Fee Paying Student Visa. Immigration New Zealand currently states that applicants need:
- An offer of place from an approved education provider.
- Evidence of sufficient funds for tuition fees, or an acceptable scholarship.
- Evidence of sufficient living funds.
- Acceptable medical and travel insurance.
- Evidence of good health and character where required.
- A genuine reason for studying in New Zealand.
- Evidence that the applicant can leave New Zealand at the end of the stay.
Living-funds requirement
For tertiary study, Immigration New Zealand currently requires evidence of at least NZD 20,000 per year for living expenses when studying for one year or longer. This is separate from tuition fees.
The University of Waikato also states that international students must provide evidence of additional funds of at least NZD 20,000 per year for living costs and that tuition fees are required as a pre-lodgement requirement for the student visa application.
Insurance
Student visa holders must have acceptable medical and travel insurance for the relevant period of study. Waikato requires international students to maintain appropriate insurance, and Studentsafe is among the University's arrangements for international students.
Work rights
Current Immigration New Zealand rules allow eligible student visa holders to work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during permitted holidays, depending on the conditions attached to the individual visa. Students must check the exact conditions on their eVisa or visa letter.
Visa compliance
Students must continue to comply with their visa conditions, including studying the approved programme and maintaining satisfactory academic progress. Waikato reports non-compliance with student-visa requirements to Immigration New Zealand.
