University of Auckland

The University of Auckland (UoA; Maori: Waipapa Taumata Rau) is a public research university based in Auckland, New Zealand. The institution was established in 1883 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Originally it was housed in a disused courthouse. Today, the University of Auckland is New Zealand's largest university by enrolment, hosting about 40,000 students on five Auckland campuses. The City Campus, in the Auckland central business district, has the bulk of the students and faculties. There are eight faculties, including a law school, as well as three associated research institutes.

 

No.1 ranked New Zealand university

  • The University is ranked 65th in the world by the QS World University Rankings 2025, making it New Zealand’s highest-ranked university. It is also the largest and most comprehensive, with more than 35,000 students, including in 2023, 9,350 international students representing around 107 countries.

No.1 in Oceania and fifth in the world for sustainability

  • As ranked by the 2024 QS World University Sustainability Rankings. The University’s fifth place has been assessed against 1,397 tertiary institutions worldwide and its first place in Oceania is assessed from 46 institutions in New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific.

 

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest research organisation with more than 12,000 staff and postgraduate students involved in fundamental and applied research. The University generates more than $200 million in annual research revenue.

 

Auckland UniServices Ltd, the knowledge transfer company of the University is the largest commercialization company of its kind in Australasia, bringing income and new employment opportunities into the University and New Zealand. It has 1,200 active projects with more than 300 New Zealand firms at any one time. In 2016, UniServices generated revenues of $114 million, over 50 licenses for intellectual property, and created more than 11 businesses to commercialize University research.

 

Over the last 10 years, through UniServices, the University has filed over 140 patents. The results of this research are delivered to the community, including the business community where the University has 2,500 active research contracts at any one time. 

 

The University has a strong Graduate Office, a strong focus on doctoral studies, and on cross-disciplinary and cross-faculty research.

 

The University is located in the harbor city of Auckland, New Zealand’s economic and cultural hub, with easy access to stunning beaches and rainforests.

 

Auckland was ranked third out of 230 cities in the 2017 Mercer Quality of Living Survey and in the top 30 of the QS Best Student Cities 2016.
