Tertiary Foundation Certificate (TFC) – At a Glance

This is an undergraduate foundation programme that prepares students for entry into bachelor’s degree study at the University of Auckland by building academic skills, confidence and subject knowledge needed for tertiary study.

Programme Purpose

TFC helps learners who:

  • Don’t yet meet direct admission requirements for undergraduate degrees

  • Have been out of study for a while

  • Want to strengthen literacy, numeracy and academic skills

  • Aim for targeted pathways to bachelor programmes (Arts, Science, Commerce, etc.)

  • Need additional support before starting a full undergraduate degree.

 

Programme Structure & Subjects

Students must pass eight papers across two semesters, including core academic skills courses plus electives in subject areas.

Semester 1 (60 points)

  • Academic Literacy I

  • Foundation Mathematics I

  • Foundation Biology I

  • Foundation Chemistry I

Semester 2 (60 points)

  • Data Analytics

  • Foundation Mathematics II

  • Foundation Biology II

  • Foundation Chemistry II

Semester 1 (60 points)

  • Academic Literacy I

  • Foundation Sociology I

Semester 2 (60 points)

  • Introduction to Arts & Humanities

  • Environment and Society

Core Areas Include:

  • Literacy / Academic communication

  • Mathematics / data skills

  • Sciences (biology, chemistry)

  • Humanities (history, sociology)

  • Electives linked to desired undergraduate pathways

 

Disciplines & Specialisations

TFC doesn’t offer specialisations in the same way as degree programmes, but students choose pathway electives tailored to future undergraduate study in Arts, Science, Commerce or Health sciences. Successful TFC completion helps students meet subject prerequisites for their chosen bachelor programme.

Visa Requirements (If Studying in NZ)

International students who wish to study TFC on?campus in New?Zealand will generally need a student visa from Immigration New?Zealand. Requirements typically include:

  • Offer of Place / Confirmation of Enrolment
  • Proof of funds for tuition and living costs
  • Health insurance and character/medical evidence
