Master of Aerospace Engineering MAerospaceEng

The Master of Aerospace Engineering (MAerospaceEng) is a Level 9 postgraduate degree that prepares students to work at advanced levels in the aerospace sector, including aircraft and spacecraft design, systems engineering, structures, dynamics, and research.

This programme combines core aerospace engineering courses, advanced technical electives and a research or project component so you gain both theoretical depth and real-world applications.

Why Study This Course?

  • Designed for students seeking specialised aerospace knowledge in areas such as structures, dynamics, propulsion and space systems.

  • Beneficial for those aiming for careers in the aerospace industry, defence, satellite systems, space missions or R&D.

  • Adds strong research and technical capability which is valued globally.

Programme Structure & Subjects

All students must complete:

Core Courses

  • AEROSPCE 730 – Aerospace Systems Design

  • AEROSPCE 740 – Aerospace Structures & Mechanisms
These introduce design principles and structural theory in aerospace contexts.

Research or Project Requirement

  • Taught option: AEROSPCE 791 – Research Project (45 points)

  • Research thesis: AEROSPCE 792 / 793 – Thesis (90 points)
This research component applies knowledge to real technical problems.

Advanced Electives (you choose based on interest and supervisor advice)

Examples include:

  • AEROSPCE 720 – Space Dynamics & Missions

  • MECHENG 711 – Computational Fluid Dynamics

  • MECHENG 712 – Aerohydrodynamics

  • MECHENG 743 – Composite Materials

  • ENGGEN 769 – Research Methods for Engineers
Electives give you specialised technical depth.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Aerospace Engineering often pursue careers such as:

  • Aerospace Engineer (design, testing, analysis)

  • Flight Systems Engineer / Space Systems Engineer

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics Specialist

  • Structures & Materials Engineer

  • Research & Development Roles

  • Project Technical Lead / Consultant

Visa & Immigration (International Students)

To study in NZ you must obtain a Student Visa via Immigration New Zealand, which requires:

  • Offer of place in the full-time programme
  • Proof of funds for tuition & living costs
