COLLEGE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

The University of Newcastle College of International Education (CIE) is the official pathway college affiliated with The University of Newcastle (Australia). It provides preparatory and academic pathway programs that lead to degree courses at the University. All programs are registered with the University of Newcastle, and the College is part of Kaplan’s global education network and accredited by TEQSA.

While the College itself does not have a separate ranking, students benefit from its affiliation with The University of Newcastle, which is globally recognised:

Types of Courses (Study Levels)

CIE offers a range of pathway programs designed to bring international students up to speed academically and linguistically before entering degree study at The University of Newcastle:

Foundation Studies

  • Designed for students to prepare for first-year undergraduate study at the University.

  • Can be completed in either 8 or 12 months

Foundation Studies in Medicine

  • A specialised foundation pathway for entry into Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (JMP) programs at the University.

Degree Transfer Programs

  • Provides first-year equivalent study that leads directly into Year 2 of many undergraduate degrees.

  • Covers streams such as business, commerce, engineering, IT, construction, design, media & communication.

Pre-Master’s Program

  • Prepares students for postgraduate study and provides credit toward master’s degrees (e.g., business and IT).

  • Helps students begin at up to second trimester of the corresponding University postgraduate course.

Express Preparation / English Support

  • Includes academic English and university-study preparation courses linked to pathway progression.

Scholarship

CIE Program Scholarships (Up to 30%)

What it is:
CIE offers tuition fee scholarships for international students enrolling in pathway programs.

Key Points:

  • Scholarship value is typically between 5 % and 30 % of your total program tuition fee.

  • No separate application is required; scholarships are automatically awarded when you meet eligibility.

  • The exact amount depends on factors like your academic performance (grades) and nationality.

Enrolled in an eligible CIE pathway program such as:

  • Foundation Studies

  • Degree Transfer / Extended Degree Transfer

  • Pre-Master’s programs
    Meet academic and entry requirements for the chosen pathway

 

Kaplan Family Bursary (10 %)

What it is:

  • A family bursary that supports siblings studying at CIE.

Benefit:

  • 10 % tuition fee reduction for the second sibling (or further siblings) enrolling at CIE.

Eligibility:

  • International students
  • Siblings enrolling at the College concurrently or in related intakes
  • Automatically applied — no separate application needed.

 

CIE Progression Scholarship

What it is:
Supports students moving from CIE into an eligible University of Newcastle degree.

Key Benefits:

  • 20 % tuition fee reduction per year when you enter your University degree program (such as a bachelor’s or master’s).

Eligibility Conditions:

  • Have successfully completed one of the CIE pathway programs (Foundation, Degree Transfer, Degree Transfer Extended, Pre-Master’s).

Achieve required academic performance:

  • Foundation & Express prep: meet specific average marks as per offer.

  • Degree Transfer / Extended Degree Transfer: at least 50 % pass rate.

  • Pre-Master’s: at least 50 % pass rate.
    Progress directly into an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at the University.
    No failures in your college program — progression scholarships require consistent academic performance.

How It Works:

  • CIE Progression Scholarships are usually automatically applied once you meet the criteria during the transition to the University of Newcastle.

 

Other University of Newcastle Scholarships You Can Access

After CIE and while studying at the University of Newcastle, you may also be eligible for university-wide scholarships including:

International Excellence Scholarship 2026

  • Automatic 20 % tuition fee reduction for eligible international students entering a University of Newcastle undergraduate or postgraduate program starting in 2026 or later.
  • No separate application — assessed when you apply for your university degree.

Available to students who:

  • Are full-fee paying international students.

  • Commence study in an eligible CRICOS-registered degree.

  • Are not receiving another major university scholarship unless special dispensation is granted.

This scholarship is administered at the University level, so CIE students who progress may receive it when they begin their university degree.
