Principles of Palliative Care in Practice

This module examines the philosophy of palliative care and the influence of policy to inform the provision of a quality, person-centred service. It provides opportunities for participants to enhance knowledge that will inform their practice in palliative care

 

Participants will study the philosophy of palliative care; quality of life and living with a life limiting illness; local national and international policy and frameworks relating to palliative care; reflection and the therapeutic use of self in the provision of quality palliative care; transitions and the concepts of hope, suffering and compassion; individual and family wellbeing; psychosocial aspects; spiritual dimensions; cultural sensitivity; body image and sexuality; grief and loss in palliative care; communication dynamics; collaborative team working in palliative care; decision making in palliative care and preserving personal integrity.  

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme the student will:

  • Have the knowledge and skills to meet patient’s palliative care needs as identified in local, national and international policy 

  • Have the ability to focus on dynamic communication strategies supporting teamwork and decision-making within the context of patient and family support throughout the trajectory of a life-limiting illness.  

  • Have an understanding of the relationship between physical, psychosocial and spiritual dimensions of hope and loss
