The overall aim of this interprofessional module is to provide learners with the theoretical basis for infection prevention and control practice and an understanding of the core principles of infection prevention and control applied to healthcare practice, across health and social care settings.

 

Learners will critically explore principles and standards underpinning infection prevention and control practice. Working in accordance with national and international guidance this module will help learners to develop advanced infection prevention and control interventions for safe and effective health and social care practice and to critically explore the impact of these interventions on the prevention and management of healthcare associated infections. This module will help learners to develop clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills and to utilise evidence-based, specialised knowledge in care delivery.

 

Learners will appreciate the value of a collaborative and multidisciplinary team approach to managing infection prevention and control strategies and clinical programmes. Cognisant of the importance of a multidisciplinary stakeholder approach to infection prevention and control education, the module provides specialist teaching, delivered in collaboration with health service partner organisations, including, University of Limerick Hospital Group and the Health Service Executive Mid-West Community Healthcare, CHO 3. *The module can be taken as a stand-alone/University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of the MSc in Infection Prevention and Control Leadership programme offered by the Department of Nursing and Midwifery.
