Biocompatibility and Device Design
The goal of this module is to introduces generally the different classes of biomaterials and focuses on the ways in which these materials interact with biological systems. It introduces biomaterials for different applications, and characterises biomaterials in terms of their structural, physical and biological attributes.
Topics that will be covered include:
- Specify biomaterials for use in a range of biomedical applications.
- Propose a rationale for the use of specific biomaterials in a range of clinical applications.
- Describe experimental work to evaluate the properties of a biomaterial for a specific application, and interpret data.
- Discuss the complex interactions between biomaterials and biological systems.
- Describe methods ex vivo, in vitro and in vivo bio-compatability characterisation of a biomaterial.
- Discuss methods of characterisation of biomaterials.
- Discuss the major biological responses to biomaterials.
- Describe the clinical modes of failure of biomaterials.
- State the regulatory requirements for characterisation of biomaterials.
- Discuss important ethical concerns in different areas of biomaterials.
