Economics

Economics is at the forefront of public policy and issues such as economic growth, the stability of the economy, regulating financial institutions, resource taxation, financing education and income planning. Through this major you'll learn how complex economic developments can be understood in terms of a set of simple but fundamental principles.

The Economics major is designed for students seeking to become professional economists and pursue careers as specialist economists in government and business, economic consultants, economic analysts and policy advisers.

Through this major you’ll learn how apparently complex economic developments can be understood in terms of a set of simple but fundamental principles, such as the theory of choice. This economic approach can be applied to understanding topics as diverse as the economics of climate change, the valuation of currencies and other assets, the fairness of international trade, and the costs and benefits of different economic policies.

This extended major provides you with the depth of knowledge and skills required to become a professional economist or pursue economic studies at PhD level. You’ll study microeconomic and macroeconomic frameworks to analyse economic problems, and produce and communicate economic research for fellow economists, business professionals and policymakers. You’ll also develop the capacity to analyse economic issues pertaining to domestic and world economies.
