Lung and Sternal Ultrasound for Health Professionals
Bedside point of care ultrasound is transforming clinical management and changing the rules in cardiothoracic settings and is rapidly becoming used by many clinical specialties.
Ultrasound of the lung enables real-time, non-invasive, rapid diagnosis and day to day monitoring of acute lung conditions such as effusion, consolidation, atelectasis, pulmonary oedema and pneumothorax. It is faster, more convenient and often more accurate than a chest x-ray and has no radiation risk.
Ultrasound of the sternum enables early reliable and accurate identification of sternal complications including bone non-union, instability and dehiscence. A sternal wound infection which have significant implications for patient morbidity and mortality impacting mobilisation and recovery after cardiac surgery.
