Introduction to Art Therapy

The course will incorporate both theoretical and experiential learning to guide you through a gentle and mindful exploration of diverse art materials and processes. This workshop will include slide show presentations, case study presentations, individual art making experiences, and group discussion. You'll create, reflect and explore personal meaning, and also experience the potential of art-making as a tool for personal growth, connectedness and self-awareness.

The first day will offer an overview of the key principles of art therapy, including the power of non-verbal expression, connecting to a creative self, and how different art materials can elicit a range of responses in participants. A case study will also demonstrate the use of art therapy with children and adolescents living with cancer. The second day will focus on the impact and use of different art materials in art therapy, such as fluid and resistive materials. A case study presentation on the use of art therapy with adults with eating disorders will also be discussed.

The workshop is suitable for a wide range of backgrounds and professional practitioners, including prospective students of the Master of Art Therapy. Are you only looking for a 1-day workshop? If so, please consider the Art Therapy 'Taster' short course.

All art materials will be provided, and the course will be held in the purpose-built Art Therapy Studio at the Bundoora campus. Morning and afternoon tea will be also be provided.
