About the Master of Art Therapy

This specialised program provides you with training in the practice of art therapy, which combines art and counselling within a clinical, therapeutic or community context. Art therapy is used for the treatment and healing of developmental, emotional and psychological problems or disorders. It is also used as a wellbeing intervention for groups and communities experiencing distress.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.

International students

Academic entry requirement

Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

At least one year of human services work experience such as counselling and/or community work (paid or voluntary).

Prospective students who do not meet the counselling skills requirements for entry into the Master of Art Therapy may pathway through our Introduction to Counselling Skills Course.

Specialisation - compulsory: Fine arts, graphic design, art education, psychology, counselling, social work, occupational therapy or nursing.

Applicants must provide a written application and submit a portfolio demonstrating their skills with a range of visual art media (Compilation of 10-15 photographs of your own original artwork).

Selection criteria

  • Applicant to provide resume.

  • All applicants must complete and submit a Personal Statement.

  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview. Details will be provided by telephone or mail to applicants required to attend. Short listed applicants will be required to attend a scheduled interview.

  • Applicants to provide two written references (preferably including one academic and one professional reference).

Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

English language requirement

7.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 7.0.

A$39 000 per 120 credit points.
Note: 120 credit points represents full-time study for one year.
