Latin American Affairs Certificate

  • Demonstrate verbal and written proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or an aboriginal/indigenous language of Latin America.
  • Understand and contextualize knowledge related to the history, geography, social conditions and cultural production of Latin America and the relationship of Latin America to major world powers.
  • Situate Latinx communities in the present-day United States within a broader Latin American context and analyze connections between Latin America and Latinx histories, social conditions, and cultural production such as literature and film.

The course of study consists of a minimum of 30 credits: 9 credits of required core courses, and 21 credits of appropriate electives. In addition, the student must have proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese equivalent to that attained by the end of the third-year language sequence, as certified by the School of Language, Culture, and Society, or by placement scores.
