Master of Medical Education MMedEd
The Master of Medical Education course is aimed at those staff training, supervising or leading larger groups of undergraduate or postgraduate doctors. It is also suitable for those individuals who are aspiring to a higher role in medical education at any level, or those wishing to commit to a substantial research project in medical education.
Explore the fundamentals of teaching and learning, and critically examine the range of assessments used in medicine, including work-based assessment of competence, the assessment of professionalism and the assessment of knowledge. Examine the new practices available through technology enhanced learning.
Consider in more detail the intricacies and complexities of medical training in a strict regulatory framework, how we can best manage quality and support both our learners and teachers through this. Cover student success, retention, attainment and exploring issues such as fitness to practise. Examine a range of educational research methods.
The course uses a mix of online lectures, group-based seminars, interactive workshop activities, and action learning sets. Self-directed learning will also support your learning experience.
You will be assessed using multiple methods reflecting the underpinning principles of universal design for learning, including essay format, individual presentation, portfolio, reflective accounts, a written research proposal, and an independent project report.
The course is taught on a part-time basis via live synchronous sessions, self-study, and asynchronous activity on the Canvas platform.
In year 1, you must complete modules to a total of 60 credits, the core module Planning, Delivering and Assessing in Medical Education and choosing either Teaching, Learning and Assessment in the Clinical Workplace or Supervision and Support of Medical Learners to gain the full number of credits.
In year 2, there is a choice of modules to gain a total of 120 credits (optional exit point for a Diploma) or a total of 180 credits (which must include Academic Practice: Independent Project for Masters level).The MMedEd must be completed within a maximum of five years.
The Masters programme is planned over two years, but extensions to this time can be arranged to a maximum of five years.
We accept Accreditation of Prior Learning in terms of credit value from accredited university educational qualifications and these credits will count directly towards your qualification. We will ask for proof of the credits before an offer is issued.
