Program Description

This is a graduate certificate in Composition and Rhetoric which will enable qualified secondary school English teachers to teach credit-bearing college composition courses in their high schools.  As mandated by the state of Ohio, the certificate requires 18 graduate credit hours within the discipline (six courses) for completion.  The certificate is designed to be completed within two years.

Admission Requirements and Process

Secondary English teachers who wish to pursue the teaching certificate must submit to the Graduate school the following:

• Proof of current Ohio Teachers License in Secondary Education Language Arts
• Proof of current employment as a teacher
• Application for graduate certificate status
• Proof of master’s degree in any field

The Graduate School will review the applications. If the application meets the Graduate School’s minimum requirements, the Graduate Director in the Department of English Language and Literatures will review the applications for approval.

Core: 6 Hours

• ENG 7120 - Rhetoric Credit Hour(s): 3
• ENG 7200 - Teaching College Composition I Credit Hour(s): 3

• (summer intensive only)

1 Course from each variable title course number: 12 Hours

• ENG 7410 - Seminar in Composition Pedagogy Credit Hour(s): 3
• ENG 7420 - Seminar: Writing Practices Credit Hour(s): 3
• ENG 7430 - Seminar: Composition Theories Credit Hour(s): 3
• 1 approved elective in Composition and Rhetoric or TESOL (must be a 6000 or 7000-level ENG course) Credit Hour(s): 3
