French Studies Certificate
Return to: Programs of Study PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThis certificate provides in-depth study of French and Francophone Literature, Film, Business, Written and Oral Expression, History, and Phonetics. This certificate is suitable for graduate students wishing to meet requirements to teach French or College Credit Plus courses in the State of Ohio. This certificate also will provide currently licensed Ohio teachers the means to obtain the credentials to teach College Credit Plus courses in French in the State of Ohio. The courses are designed to provide rich cultural and literary content in the target language. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSa. The Certificate Program requires acceptance by the Graduate School as a non-degree student. b. Students must have earned at minimum a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university. c. A supplemental Department of Modern Languages application with a 1-2 page personal statement in French is required. d. Applicants must pass a department administered Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test with a minimal Intermediate High rating or the equivalent. e. Currently licensed French teachers may bypass the above requirement d. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMESUpon completion of the program, students will be able to: -demonstrate an advanced understanding of language and literature in French on a global context; -demonstrate writing and research skills appropriate to professional use and observe ethical practices; -demonstrate a near-native mastery of the French language, including the ability to write in French at a level appropriate to professional use, and to communicate with native French speakers; -teach specific works and literary concepts at the advanced high school level, and work as language instructors at the college level.
