Program Description

The Applied Clinical Ethics Certificate is a three-course, 9-semester-hour professional program designed to train students in the moral dimensions of health care. The program provides tools for effective ethical reasoning and analysis of real-life clinical problems.

Admission Requirements

An undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree in the health sciences, law, social work, or chaplaincy is required. The applicant must also be approved by the Department of Population and Public Health. If the applicant’s native language is not English, a minimum score of 213 (CBT) or 79/120 (IBT) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. Alternatively, the applicant must have a band score of 6 through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Applied Clinical Ethics Certificate program, graduates will be able to:

1. Articulate the foundational principles of normative healthcare ethics from historical and philosophical perspectives, with an appreciation of the pluralistic nature of modern medicine.
2. Analyze clinical ethics issues and cases with skill and confidence, emphasizing both moral principles and professional virtues.
3. Participate fully in the activities of ethics committees and clinical ethics consulting services, with the ability to apply critical thinking when confronted with competing ethical duties.
4. Assist in the development of ethical and legal policies in healthcare that protect both institutional integrity and the best interests of individual patients.
5. Develop professional expertise in a specialized area of personal interest, with the benefit of enriching the ethical dimension of their clinical practice.
