Program Description

The Certificate in Modern Languages is geared toward intermediate-level proficiency in French or Spanish. The Certificate consists of 12 credit hours at 2000-level or above. It will enhance career options for students in a wide range of majors and minors. The Certificate can stand alone or be used as a step toward obtaining a minor or major in applicable languages.

Admission Requirements


FR 1020 or the equivalent with a C or above

OR

SPN 1020 or the equivalent with a C or above.


Students should contact language advisors to determine if the prerequisite has been met.

Program Learning Outcomes

Develop intermediate-level proficiency according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students at the Intermediate level of proficiency are able to understand, read, speak, and write on a wide variety of familiar topics, engage in appropriate social interaction, thrive in cultural situations, as well as create with the language.

Develop cultural competence and sensitivity to handle everyday situations in the target culture. Students in the Certificate Program are encouraged to study abroad to develop their linguistic and cross-cultural competencies.

I. Two courses (6 credits): FR 2010 and (FR 2020 or FR 2500).

II. Two courses (6 credits) at FR 3000-level or above.

Spanish Option


I. Two courses (6 credits): SPN 2010 and (SPN 2020 or SPN 2500).

II. Two courses (6 credits) at SPN 3000-level or above.
