The Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology (Lighting) is designed for graduates and professionals who want to develop specialist knowledge in lighting without completing another bachelor’s degree. Massey describes it as particularly suitable for engineers, sales representatives, product designers, architects and interior designers, as well as people already working in lighting or related industries who want to upskill. The programme covers lighting fundamentals, design principles and lighting technology, with teaching from industry experts. Students also have access to Massey’s high-tech facilities, and an optional week-long immersive workshop series is available in the Massey lighting laboratory in Auckland.

The qualification is also accredited by the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IESANZ); successful completion provides the academic requirements for IESANZ membership.

Programme Structure and Subjects / Topics

The Lighting endorsement consists of four 15-credit courses:

1. 218741 Light & Lighting – covers photometric concepts, light control and distribution, human visual processes and an introduction to colour science.
2. 218742 Lamps and Luminaires – covers light production, lamps, lighting design applications, control gear, optical control and photometric testing of lamps and luminaires. This course has 218741 as a prerequisite.
3. 218743 Interior Lighting Design – covers interior lighting principles, human requirements, statutory regulations, lighting design techniques, daylight utilisation, energy saving and creative lighting techniques.
4. 218744 Energy Efficient Lighting and Exterior Lighting Design – covers energy efficiency, lighting controls, exterior/workplace lighting, building façade floodlighting, landscape lighting, roadway and pedestrian lighting, and sports-ground lighting.

• It is available part-time over 1 or 2 years and is not available as full-time study for international students.

• Relevant professional/industry experience may allow prerequisites to be waived.
• A one-year pathway may require special permission for courses where prerequisites have not been met.
