Certificate in Wound Debridement (Level 7)

Otago Polytechnic is a public, NZQA-accredited tertiary education provider in Dunedin, New Zealand, known for its strong industry-aligned programmes, practical learning, and supportive environment for international students. It collaborates with specialist bodies (like the New Zealand Wound Care Society) to deliver unique micro-credentials and advanced clinical qualifications that enhance professional practice for health practitioners.

Why Study the Certificate in Wound Debridement (Level 7)?

Chronic, non-healing wounds are a major challenge in healthcare, affecting patient quality of life and driving healthcare costs. This certificate is New Zealand’s first and only qualification focused on conservative sharp wound debridement (CSWD) — a key clinical technique used to promote wound healing. It’s ideal for practising clinical professionals who want to upskill in advanced wound care, expand their scope of practice, and improve patient outcomes.

This programme is co-designed with the New Zealand Wound Care Society and wound care experts, ensuring cutting-edge content and practical relevance.

What You Study

The 15 credits cover four modules:

  1. What and Why of Wound Debridement
Focuses on wound pathology, healing barriers and evidence-based rationale for debridement.

  2. Debridement Modalities
Explores different debridement methods, indications, contraindications, and multidisciplinary care.

  3. Pain Management
Teaches pain evaluation and ongoing management during debridement procedures.

  4. Clinical Assessment and Skills
Covers wound assessment (including lower limb/foot), vascular considerations, diabetic foot issues and incorporates M?ori models of care (e.g., Te Whare Tapa Wh?), plus hands-on practicum skills.

Career Outcomes / Professional Uses

Completing this certificate enables you to:

  • Gain competency in conservative sharp wound debridement (CSWD) — an advanced clinical skill.
  • Work more effectively in wound care clinics, community nursing, aged care, podiatry or hospital settings.
  • Enhance your scope of practice and potential leadership in specialised wound care teams.
  • Demonstrate advanced skills validated by NZQA Level 7 micro-credential standards, which can support career progression within clinical roles.

Visa Considerations (International Students)

This qualification is not a full-time, on-campus programme and is not structured for standard student visas — it is designed for clinically employed professionals with supervised workplace access. If you are not already a healthcare practitioner working in NZ, this programme is unlikely to be eligible for a student visa. You should contact Otago Polytechnic and Immigration New Zealand to confirm your specific eligibility before applying.
