English for Academic Purposes 1

Massey University College is the official pathway provider for Massey University in New Zealand — ranked in the top 3% of universities globally, offering strong academic support and pathways into undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. At MUC, international students get targeted preparation in English language, academic skills, and university-level study readiness, supported with smaller classes and dedicated staff.

Why Study English for Academic Purposes 1 (EAP1)?

English for Academic Purposes 1 (EAP1) is designed to help international students who:

  • Need to improve English language skills and academic English before starting a tertiary qualification at Massey University College or Massey University.
  • Plan to enter MUC’s Foundation Certificate, Diploma (Business) or other further study pathways but do not yet meet the required English language entry standard.
  • Want to build confidence in academic communication, reading, writing, listening and speaking, with a focus on skills needed for lectures, assignments, presentations, and research.

Programme Structure & Skills Covered

While EAP1 does not award academic credits, it focuses on building academic English and study skills that are essential for university success:

Core Skill Areas

1. Speaking & Communication

  • Presentations, seminar participation, group discussion practice.

  • Confidence in oral participation during academic activities.

2. Listening & Note-Taking

  • Understanding lectures and academic dialogue.

  • Effective note-taking techniques for classes.

3. Reading Comprehension

  • Academic reading strategies (skimming, scanning).

  • Understanding textbook/exam questions and extended texts.

  • Academic referencing, summaries, analysis of data/case studies.

Disciplines/Specialisations

EAP1 does not offer academic majors or specialisations like business or science — it focuses solely on English language skills. However, it prepares you for pathways into specialisations such as:

• Foundation Certificate (International)
• Diploma (Business)
• Other undergraduate or postgraduate programmes after further language progression with EAP2 (if needed)

Highlights of EAP1

  • Designed for international students preparing for further study in an English-medium academic environment.
  • Multiple intakes per year — flexible start times.
  • Intensive academic English focus with university-style activities.
  • Includes internal English assessment option if you lack standard test scores.
  • Pathways into academic programmes like Foundation Certificate or Diploma after completion.

Career or Progression Outcomes

EAP1 prepares you for academic study rather than directly for a career — it is a stepping-stone towards:

  • Foundation Certificate (International) — pathway to undergraduate study
  • Diploma (Business) — pathway towards business degrees
  • English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2) for higher language competence before degree entry
  • Direct degree entry (after EAP2 if you already have academic prerequisites)

Visa Requirements

To study EAP1 on campus in New Zealand, international students must hold a New Zealand Student Visa. Requirements typically include:

  • Confirmation of offer
  • Proof of funds for tuition + living costs
  • Health/medical insurance
  • Satisfactory English ability evidence (or placement test)
