English for Academic Purposes 2

Massey University College is the official pathway provider to Massey University, one of New Zealand’s top-ranked universities (in the top 3 % globally). The college helps international students develop the academic and English language skills needed to succeed in university-level study. All pathway students have access to Massey University’s learning environment, support services, and campus facilities.

Why Study English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2)?

EAP2 is designed for international students who:

  • Already have a reasonably strong level of English but do not yet meet the language requirements for direct entry into a Massey University or MUC academic programme (e.g., Foundation Certificate, Diploma, Graduate Diploma).
  • Want to improve English language skills specific to academic study in an English-speaking university environment.
  • Are preparing to enter undergraduate or postgraduate studies and need higher-level academic English skills than what EAP1 offers (or after completing EAP1).

Programme Structure & Skills Covered

While EAP2 itself does not award academic credits, it focuses deeply on the four key language domains you’ll need for university:

Speaking

  • Presentations

  • Seminar participation

  • Small group communication

Listening

  • Lecture listening skills

  • Note-taking for academic contexts

Reading

  • Strategies like skimming and scanning

  • Comprehending academic articles and extended texts

Writing

  • Paragraphs, essays, reports

  • Summaries, referencing and analysis

  • Academic sentence structure and style

Disciplines or Specialisations Offered

EAP2 does not offer subject majors or specialisms like business or marketing. Instead, it targets general academic English skills that support progress into a wide range of future study pathways such as foundation, diploma or degree programmes at Massey University or through MUC.

Highlights & Benefits

  • Provides a higher level of academic English preparation than EAP1, ideal for students ready to transition to tertiary study.
  • Regular intakes give flexibility for planning ahead.
  • Immersive on-campus experience enhances learning and social integration.
  • Builds confidence for academic communication — essential for success in university coursework.

Progression & Outcomes

Studying EAP2 does not by itself provide a university qualification — its main outcome is improved English for academic readiness, enabling you to:

Enter Massey University College programmes such as:

  • Foundation Certificate (International – Accelerated)

  • Diploma pathways

  • Graduate Diploma pathways

  • Or gain direct entry to Massey University undergraduate or postgraduate programmes, if you meet the academic requirements once your English level is sufficiently high.

Visa Requirements

International students studying EAP2 on campus must secure a New Zealand Student Visa. Typical requirements include:

  • Formal offer letter from MUC
  • Proof of funds for tuition and living costs
  • Health/medical insurance
  • Evidence of intent to study full-time
  • English proficiency (or internal placement)
