BA (Hons) Photography
Why choose BSBI’s BA (Hons) Photography?
-
It’s a specialist creative degree validated by a leading UK creative university (UCA), combining practical craft (studio & digital practice) with critical theory and professional practice.
-
The curriculum emphasises visual storytelling, experimentation and a professional portfolio — important if you want freelance or industry work after graduation.
-
Industry links & placements: BSBI highlights careers support and help finding placements tailored to your interests — valuable for building a portfolio and finding employment.
-
Creative city advantage: Hamburg (and BSBI’s multi-campus network) gives exposure to galleries, fashion/editorial hubs and production networks.
Level of study & academic credit
-
Level: Undergraduate — BA (Hons) (UK honours).
-
Credit expectation: As an UCA-validated BA (Hons), the standard UK honours structure applies (a three-year BA (Hons) normally equates to 360 UK credits under UCA/UK frameworks).
Mode of learning & timetable
-
On-campus delivery (studio practice, workshops, seminars and field trips). Teaching days may include mornings, afternoons or evenings and, in BSBI practice, teaching can occur Monday–Saturday. Each academic year is divided into three terms. Assessments include portfolios, projects, essays and presentations.
Duration & progression routes
-
3 years (full-time BA (Hons)).
-
4 years if you enroll on the Integrated Foundation / International Route (recommended if you need portfolio training or additional entry preparation).
Entry criteria (what international applicants need)
Minimum academic
-
BA (Hons): Minimum age 18 and standard higher-secondary completion in your country (12 years of schooling) or equivalent. Specific country-by-country equivalence is applied. If you need extra preparation, the Integrated Foundation route accepts younger applicants (min age 17).
English language
-
BSBI generally requires proof of English competence for programmes taught in English — acceptable tests include IELTS / TOEFL / PTE / Duolingo or evidence of prior study in English. (Exact scores are given in the admissions pages per cohort; check your offer letter.)
Portfolio & documents
-
Portfolio of creative work is required for creative programmes (guidance on how to build an exceptional portfolio is provided by BSBI). Applications also need transcripts, passport ID, CV and motivation statement.

-
Portfolio Scholarship Competition remains an active route to substantial fee reductions — widely promoted for the Hamburg creative campus.
Quick recommendations (for applicants)
-
Prepare a strong portfolio (quality over quantity). Use the portfolio competition — it’s a real chance to reduce fees.
-
Confirm the campus: BA (Hons) Photography is actively offered at Hamburg — check if you specifically want Berlin/Paris/Barcelona for a different programme.
-
Budget realistically: tuition ~€11,000 + living costs (rent, materials, insurance). Look for scholarship & payment plan options.
-
Start visa steps early: German visa/residence permit timelines and blocked-account proof require lead time. Use BSBI’s visa office for tailored guidance.
