1. Mental Health Essentials – 15 credits

This course explores culturally responsive strategies, concepts and frameworks that can improve mental health outcomes and help mitigate risks for individuals and communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

2. Health Challenges and Interventions – 15 credits

Students critically evaluate health challenges affecting diverse populations and examine contemporary health problems, contributing factors, and strategies/interventions in local and global contexts.

3. Impact of Addiction on Communities – 15 credits

This course examines health frameworks, strategies, ethical approaches and concepts relating to people and communities affected by addiction. It includes emphasis on harm reduction, social justice and equitable health outcomes.

4. Health Practices and Policies in Aotearoa New Zealand – 15 credits

Students examine and evaluate healthcare-sector ethical guidelines, legislation, strategies and policies, including standards relevant to mental health, community health and addiction services.

NZSE launched the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare in September 2025 as one of two new NZQA-approved healthcare programmes. The qualification was specifically designed as a bridging route into postgraduate healthcare study.

The most important current pathway information is:

• Graduates can progress to NZSE's Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare (Level 8).
• The Postgraduate Diploma offers specialisations in Community Health, Addiction and Mental Health.
• The current Graduate Certificate page states that 15 credits can be transferred into the Postgraduate Diploma.
• NZSE's 2026 prospectus states that a maximum of 30 credits may potentially be granted through Credit Recognition and Transfer and/or Recognition of Prior Learning on a case-by-case basis, while completion of the Graduate Certificate provides a 15-credit transfer pathway.

International Student Visa Requirements

For an international student physically studying this qualification in New Zealand, the relevant visa will generally be the Fee Paying Student Visa, subject to the student's circumstances.

Immigration New Zealand requires applicants to have:

• An offer of place from an approved education provider.
• Sufficient funds to pay tuition fees or an acceptable scholarship.
• Sufficient funds for living expenses or an acceptable sponsor.
• Acceptable medical and travel insurance.
• Required health and character evidence.
• Genuine reasons for studying in New Zealand.
