Fundamentals of Cardiovascular Disease in Primary Care

Module Objective: This module aims to develop the knowledge and skills of practice nurses and other primary care healthcare professionals in the management of Cardiovascular Disease. Emphasis will be placed on developing a structured system of care which supports patients in managing their condition and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This module will use current guidelines and evidence-based practice in cardiovascular care as a basis for theoretical and practical lessons and will cover the main subdivisions of CVD problems that are managed in the primary care setting, with a focus on behavioural management strategies.



Module Content: There will be six units delivered as a distance learning module on Canvas. There will also be a workshop day covering practical skills cardiovascular disease prevention, identification, investigation and management. The units will cover:
· Primary Prevention: Scoring and Q-Risk
· Lifestyle and dietary advice and Lipid Management
· Hypertension and CKD
· Acute Coronary Syndromes and Cardiac Rehabilitation
· Heart Failure and Valve Devices
· Syncope, Atrial Fibrillation and Arrhythmias.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of Cardiovascular Disease for the management of individuals with these Cardiovascular conditions.
  • Use risk scoring programmes to define CVD risk and to implement risk reduction strategies.
  • Devise and implement appropriate structured management plans for patients with CVD, e.g. heart failure and post-surgical patients, using behavioural change techniques.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the therapeutic options for the management of CVD.
  • Describe the use of ECGs in CVD and demonstrate competence in performing ECGs.
  • Describe the use of ABPM and home-based BP monitoring in the management of hypertension and demonstrate competence in the use of ABPM.
