Evidenced Based Cervical Screening

This module aims to give health professionals the knowledge, skills and confidence to practice as competent and safe smeartakers.

 

Module Content:

  • Background to Cervical Screening.
  • Cervical Screening Programme and Register.
  • Anatomy and Physiology of female reproductive organs.
  • Natural history of cervical cancer.
  • Legal Issues.
  • Clinical Audit. 
  • Clinical skill and competence in undertaking cervical screening.

 

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of the criteria for early detection of cervical cancer while understanding the reasoning behind cervical screening
  • Understand the anatomy, physiology and cytopathology of the cervix
  • Demonstrate competence in performing cervical smear tests
  • Demonstrate the ability to produce and document, with appropriate history, a quality laboratory sample and dispatch it appropriately
  • Interpret laboratory smear test results accurately and apply screening recommendations as appropriate to each situation
  • Describe treatment options available for women who return abnormal smears or who have cervical cancer
  • Maintain client comfort, safety and confidentiality
  • Initiate and develop effective communication skills to facilitate relationships with both clients and colleagues
  • Develop support and counselling skills in relation to client needs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of The National Cervical Screening Programme.
