Evidenced Based Cervical Screening
This module aims to give health professionals the knowledge, skills and confidence to practice as competent and safe smeartakers.
Module Content:
- Background to Cervical Screening.
- Cervical Screening Programme and Register.
- Anatomy and Physiology of female reproductive organs.
- Natural history of cervical cancer.
- Legal Issues.
- Clinical Audit.
- Clinical skill and competence in undertaking cervical screening.
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Recognise the importance of the criteria for early detection of cervical cancer while understanding the reasoning behind cervical screening
- Understand the anatomy, physiology and cytopathology of the cervix
- Demonstrate competence in performing cervical smear tests
- Demonstrate the ability to produce and document, with appropriate history, a quality laboratory sample and dispatch it appropriately
- Interpret laboratory smear test results accurately and apply screening recommendations as appropriate to each situation
- Describe treatment options available for women who return abnormal smears or who have cervical cancer
- Maintain client comfort, safety and confidentiality
- Initiate and develop effective communication skills to facilitate relationships with both clients and colleagues
- Develop support and counselling skills in relation to client needs
- Demonstrate knowledge of The National Cervical Screening Programme.
