Evidence Based Practice for Healthcare Professionals

Module Objective: To develop the student's ability to adopt an evidence-based practice approach to professional practice.



Module Content: This module will explore how healthcare professionals can integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/service user preferences and values, for the delivery of clinically effective healthcare. The process and steps of evidence-based practice will be outlined including the development of a focused evidence-based research question. Developing search strategies and retrieving evidence across a range of healthcare databases. Critically appraising evidence and its implications for healthcare decision making. Explore in detail the research process, with a specific focus on quantitative, qualitative, mixed method and systematic review research. Developing an EBP question and designing an evidence-based practice protocol.



Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Develop a focused evidence-based practice question relevant to healthcare.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of information technology, information literacy and research literacy.
  • Analyse and critically examine current evidence relevant to student's practice/healthcare area.
  • Evaluate the contribution of evidence-based practice to the development of the discipline of nursing/midwifery.
  • Examine strategies to evaluate the effects of evidence-based practice and its contribution to decision making.
  • To identify challenges and enablers for operationalising implementation of best evidence into professional practice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the research process through the production of a focused evidence-based practice protocol.
