Dementia In Primary Care
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Identify and describe the main subtypes of dementia and their symptoms
- Describe and implement appropriate primary care based cognitive assessment and diagnostic tools and investigations
- Identify appropriate specialist and community resources to support the person with dementia and their carer
- Understand the roles of the whole primary care team and in the ongoing management of dementia
- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of the symptoms of dementia
- Understand the medico-legal issues that arise when managing a person with dementia.
This modules consists of online distance learning units over 12 weeks supported by two workshop days at UCC.
Module Objective: This module aims to develop the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in the identification and management of dementia. This module will use current guidelines and research in dementia care as a basis for theoretical and practical lessons.
