Balance: Assessment and Management in Adults
Module Objective: To provide a detailed overview of the causes and effects of balance problems in the adult population and to provide an understanding of different management protocols.
Module Content: Anatomy, physiology and pathology related to equilibrium and the principles of management and rehabilitation for patients affected by balance problems in the adult population.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Describe and critically analyse theories of equilibrium.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the different systems involved in maintenance of balance including the vestibular system, the central nervous system and the peripheral musculo-skeletal system.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the different protocols used for assessment of balance with special reference to assessment of the vestibular system.
- Integrate knowledge about the pathology affecting the peripheral and the central balance structure.
- Integrate and analyse the evidence related to the different rehabilitation protocols involved in the management of chronic balance disorders.
