Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Models: Behavioural Activation for Depression
Module Objective: This module aims to give students an introduction to the Behavioural Activation model of CBT models used when working with people experiencing depression including severe depression.
Module Content: An introduction to simple Behavioural Activation to include consideration of underpinning principles and research into efficacy of various CBT approaches to depression. Consideration will be given to obstacles in simple behavioural activation.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Interpret the evidence base for cognitive and behavioural treatment approaches for depression.
- Assess patients with depression, taking into account clinical manifestations, co-morbidity, past history, present life situation, course and outcome of depression in suitability for BA, being able to give a clear rationale for all clinical decision making.
- Apply and give a rationale for their choice of a cognitive or behavioural approach to treat depression.
- Demonstrate an insightful knowledge of BA and an ability to identify their own values and beliefs in working with depression and the application of BA to their own lives.
- Sensitively adapt BA for depression and ensure equitable access for people from diverse cultures and with different values.
- Appraise clinical research to judge the quality of information underpinning a BA approach in depression with and without comorbidity.
