Cochlear Implants, Implantable Hearing Devices, and Impact on Communication for Children and Adults
Module Objective: To address the technological development and clinical applications of implantable hearing devices (including cochlear implants, BAHA, middle ear implants and brainstem implants) and their impact on deaf children and adults.
Module Content: Past and currrent technological advances, assessment and habilitation protocols, the role of interdisciplinary and interagency working, the impact of implantation on deaf children and adults with and without complex needs.
Learning Outcome: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: ·Demonstrate an understanding of current technologies including BAHA, middle ear implants and brainstem implants, and the principles which underlie them ·Critically evaluate the multidisciplinary assessment and management protocols used for children and adults utilising these technologies ·Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of these technologies on the communication and listening skills of children and adults.
