Foundations of Paediatric Intensive Care Nursing (GOSH/LSBU Partnership) (Level 6)

For all modules and courses the applications portal will close 4 weeks before the start date. All applications must be submitted and funding confirmed before the portal closes. Any applications that have not been processed and or do not have funding confirmed from the sponsor organisation before the portal closure will not be accepted by the IHSC administrator staff

The major focus of this module of study will be the application of essential physiology of the major body systems and the systematic assessment of the critically ill child or young person. Underlying pathophysiology and reasons for admission of the child to the paediatric intensive care unit will be explored. Knowledge underpinning a systematic assessment will be developed through critical review of relevant theory and reflective accounts of clinical experience.

Aims of the module:

  • To provide the student with essential knowledge and understanding surrounding the admission of a child to paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and the role of the nurse in the admission and ongoing assessment process.
  • To provide the nurse with effective assessment skills underpinned by sound knowledge of the relevant anatomy and physiology.
  • Explore in-depth the issues surrounding the organisation and delivery of care within the PICU setting, to include ethical concepts and their application to clinical situations.
