For all modules and courses the applications portal will close 4 weeks before the start date. All applications must be submitted and funding confirmed before the portal closes. Any applications that have not been processed and or do not have funding confirmed from the sponsor organisation before the portal closure will not be accepted by the IHSC administrator staff

This module will focus on the continuing management of the infant, child or adolescent requiring paediatric intensive care. A systems based approach will be used to explore care pathways to manage the specific physiological changes, which may be experienced by children or young people. Discharge planning and the implications for ongoing care that the child or young person and family may require will be considered. The profound impact that the paediatric intensive care experience may have on the child or young person and family will also be examined. Implicit throughout is the consideration of ethical, legal and professional issues.

Aims of the module:

  • Provide the student with essential knowledge surrounding the management of care for the infant, child and young person requiring specific intensive care interventions, including the ethical, legal, and professional implications of such interventions in the light of current practices, and government reports.
  • Develop the students’ ability to critically review research studies and literature, highlighting the implications for evidence-based practice within the paediatric intensive care area.
  • Enable the student to evaluate the impact of PICU admission on the infant, child and young person and family.
