ENVR302 and ENVR303 are particularly important progression requirements: students must achieve a B Grade Point Average in both courses to progress to the final year.

Year 4 includes:

  • ENVR415 Assessing and Communicating Environmental Effects and Risks
  • ENVR481 Environmental Science Research Project

Focuses on environmental and climate change and the processes affecting natural systems. Potential career areas include natural science, government, environmental planning and resource management.

Environmental Contamination
Focuses on identifying and analysing environmental contaminants and understanding how contamination can be managed and prevented.

Environmental Hazards and Disasters
Focuses on environmental hazards, natural disaster processes, risk and environmental impacts.

Freshwater

Sustainable Coasts
Focuses on coastal environments and sustainability, including issues such as coastal change and erosion.

Latest Updates / Special Requirements

The current 2026 programme regulations are important for applicants because they establish several progression requirements.

The latest regulations came into force on 1 January 2026. They require:

  • 480 points overall
  • At least 255 points from the compulsory Environmental Science schedule
  • At least 135 points in one major
  • At least 120 points at 400-level
  • Completion of ENVR300 Environmental Science Work Experience
  • Completion of all 300-level courses before entering the final year
  • A B Grade Average in both ENVR302 and ENVR303 before progressing to the final year.


International Student Visa Requirements

International students normally require a New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa to study the BEnvSci(Hons) full-time at UC.

Immigration New Zealand's current requirements include:

  • Offer of place from an approved education provider
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to pay tuition, or an applicable scholarship
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for living costs or an acceptable sponsor
  • Acceptable medical and travel insurance
  • Genuine intention to study
  • Evidence of onward travel or sufficient funds to purchase onward travel
  • Compliance with any other visa requirements.
