• UC's current PhD information was updated as part of its 2026 doctoral information and confirms that PhD study can begin on the first day of any month.
• The current 2026/27 Core UC Doctoral Scholarship application round is open from 20 August 2026 until 15 October 2026 for applicants intending to start before 1 July 2027.
• Applicants should identify a potential supervisor before submitting the PhD application.
• International applicants undergo assessment of their overseas qualifications and transcripts by UC's International Office in consultation with the relevant department.
• Preparatory courses may be required in some cases.
• Some research projects/courses may require vaccinations or other discipline-specific requirements.
• International students should be aware that UC says approval for part-time PhD study is only granted in exceptional circumstances and that part-time status can affect student-visa status.

International Student Visa Requirements

For an international student physically undertaking the PhD in New Zealand, the relevant visa is generally the New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa, subject to Immigration New Zealand's assessment and the student's specific circumstances.

Current requirements include:

• An Offer of Place from an approved New Zealand education provider.
• Evidence of tuition-fee payment, ability to pay, or acceptable scholarship funding.
• Evidence of sufficient funds for living expenses.
