Programme Structure and Subjects/Topics

The current 180-point structure consists of four compulsory courses, elective study and either a professional project/dissertation or additional coursework.

Compulsory courses:

  • DRRE401 – Introduction to Disaster Risk and Resilience, 15 points
  • DRRE402 – Natural Hazard Risk Assessment, 15 points
  • DRRE403 – Disaster Risk and Resilience Applications, 15 points
  • GISC422 – Foundations of Geographic Information Systems and Science, 15 points

GISC422 is required unless the student's previous GIS study is approved as sufficient.

Students then complete:

  • at least 15 points of approved 400-level elective study;
  • either DRRE691 – Professional Project in Disaster Risk and Resilience, 60 points;
  • or 60 points of approved additional coursework. UC strongly recommends the professional project/dissertation option.

Latest Updates/Special Requirements

  • The current MDRR qualification remains listed by UC as an active 180-point master's programme.
  • UC's current programme page lists February as the standard start and recommends applying at least one month before the February or July start dates.
  • The current regulations require a relevant university degree with a B average or higher in the final year and 15 points of 100-level Statistics or equivalent, although the statistics requirement can be waived at the Programme Coordinator/Head of School's discretion.
  • GISC422 is compulsory unless previous GIS study is approved as sufficient.
  • The current regulations have a 36-month maximum time limit for the qualification.
  • Students may be eligible to transfer into the Master of Science in Disaster Risk and Resilience after completing the MDRR coursework with a B+ GPA or better, subject to approval.
  • The MDRR can be awarded with Merit or Distinction under the current regulations.

  • UC's current 2026 course regulations show the compulsory MDRR courses as campus-based.


International Student Visa Requirements

For an international student undertaking the MDRR in New Zealand, the normal visa route is the New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa.

Immigration New Zealand currently states that applicants must have:

  • an offer of place from an approved education provider;
  • sufficient funds to pay tuition fees, or an applicable scholarship;
  • sufficient money for living expenses or an acceptable sponsor;
  • acceptable insurance;
  • the required health and character documentation;
  • genuine intentions to study;
  • evidence of onward travel or sufficient funds for it.
