For students who were eligible to enrol, the MSpecTchg was designed as a professional, coursework-based master's for educators working with children and learners with special educational needs across early childhood, primary, and secondary settings. It was intended for professionals who wanted advanced specialist expertise and leadership capability without undertaking a research thesis.

Programme Structure and Subjects / Topics

The 180-point qualification consists of Part I and Part II.

Part I is the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching. Students must complete Part I before entering Part II and must achieve a B GPA or higher to progress.

The Postgraduate Diploma consisted of 120 points and included specialist teaching theory, evidence-based/interprofessional practice and practical experience. Courses varied according to the selected endorsement.

Examples include:

• EDST601 – Core Theory and Foundations of Specialist Teaching
• EDST651 – Theory and Foundations in Complex Educational Needs
• EDST652 – Evidence-based Interprofessional Practice in Complex Educational Needs
• EDST653 – Practicum in Complex Educational Needs.

Part II of the master's consists of 60 points selected from the approved Schedule E courses.

The 2026 regulations require at least one approved Part II course and show options including:

• EDME637 – Distributing Leadership Through Coaching and Mentoring
• EDME638 – Teachers as Leaders
• EDME669 – Leading and Managing Decision-Making in Organisations.

Latest Updates / Special Requirements

The most important current update is:

• MSpecTchg is not open to new enrolments.
• The 2026 regulations explicitly confirm that no new enrolments are being accepted.
• The related Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching is also currently closed to new enrolments.
• UC advises prospective students to contact the Faculty of Education for updates.

Additional specialist requirements historically/currently associated with the pathway include:

• Prior teacher education.
• Current teacher registration for most PGDip endorsements.
• Professional experience.
• Police vetting where required.
• Additional New Zealand Sign Language proficiency for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing endorsement.

International Student Visa Requirements

If UC reopens the programme and an international student receives an eligible Offer of Place, the normal New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa framework would apply.

Immigration New Zealand currently requires evidence including:

• Offer of Place from an approved education provider.
• Sufficient funds for tuition or evidence of an appropriate scholarship/financial arrangement.
• Living-cost funds.
• Required health and character evidence.
• Evidence of genuine intention to study.
• Appropriate insurance.
• Evidence concerning onward travel or sufficient funds for departure, as applicable.
