Programme Structure and Subjects / Topics

The MSc has two main parts.

Part I – Coursework

Part I normally consists of 120 points of advanced science coursework. The exact courses depend on the chosen subject. Coursework commonly includes advanced disciplinary study, research preparation, research proposal development and subject-specific specialist courses.

Part II – Research

Part II consists of a substantial independent thesis or dissertation. Students undertake research under academic supervision and investigate an approved research question in their chosen field.

Examples of subject-specific structures include:

  • Biological Sciences: BIOL411 Research Preparation, BIOL412 Research Proposal, 400-level biological science courses and BIOL690 MSc Thesis.
  • Cellular and Molecular Biology: advanced CEMB/BIOL courses followed by CEMB690 MSc Thesis.
  • Microbiology: BIOL411, BIOL412, BIOL455 Applied and Molecular Microbiology, BIOL456 Dynamics of Microbiological Interactions and approved electives, followed by MBIO690 MSc Thesis.
  • Chemistry: CHEM430 Research Methods 1, CHEM431 Research Methods 2, CHEM480 Research Project and approved advanced chemistry courses, followed by CHEM690 MSc Thesis.
