The 2026 regulations confirm:

• 60 points are required.
• The qualification has a 24-month maximum timeframe.
• There are no majors, minors or endorsements.
• Students may not fail more than 30 points.
• Honours, Merit and Distinction are not awarded for this certificate.
• Completed courses may be transferred into the Postgraduate Diploma in Education or Master of Education with approval and subject to meeting the higher qualification's entry requirements.

International Student Visa Requirements

An international student undertaking the PGCertEd in New Zealand would normally apply for a Fee Paying Student Visa, provided the study arrangement meets the visa requirements.

Immigration New Zealand currently states that this visa:

• Costs from NZ$850.
• Can allow a stay of up to 4 years.
• Has an 80% processing timeframe of 8 weeks.
• Requires an Offer of Place from an approved education provider.
• Requires evidence of tuition funding or an acceptable scholarship.
• Requires evidence of living-cost funds or an acceptable sponsor.
• Requires acceptable medical and travel insurance.
• Requires applicants to meet health, character and genuine-intention requirements.
