Student Visa Work Rights

Current Immigration New Zealand rules state that eligible Fee Paying Student Visa holders can work up to 25 hours per week while studying and full-time during scheduled holidays, depending on the conditions attached to their individual visa.

Important for this programme

The 100-hour industry placement is part of the academic programme and should not be confused with ordinary part-time employment. Students should follow NMIT's arrangements and Immigration New Zealand requirements for any practical/industry component.


Special Requirements for Distance Students

This course has some particularly important requirements if a student is considering distance study.

NMIT states that distance-study applicants must have either:

  • Employment in a suitable aquaculture workplace, or
  • Recent relevant experience and access to an appropriate aquaculture workplace.

They must also be able to:

  • Complete required practical work
  • Attend compulsory residential workshops
  • Attend examinations at NMIT or an alternative tertiary institute.
