Diploma in Nautical Science Level 6

The New Zealand Diploma in Nautical Science (Level 6) is a professional maritime qualification designed for people progressing toward the role of a Watchkeeper Deck / Officer of the Watch (OOW).

NMIT states that the qualification is an approved training programme for:

  • Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Watchkeeper Deck Certificate of Competency, and
  • IMO STCW II/1 Officer of the Watch (OOW) certification.


Important Sea-Time Requirement

One of the most important points for prospective international students is that this is not simply a classroom qualification.

NMIT requires students to satisfy the relevant MNZ sea-time requirements.

Admission to the diploma is through one of two principal routes:

Option 1 – Approved training programme

At least:

12 months sea service

as part of an approved training programme such as a cadet programme, including:

  • Onboard training
  • An approved training record book
  • At least 6 months of bridge watchkeeping duties under supervision of the master or qualified officer.

Option 2 – General sea service

At least:

36 months sea service

including:

  • At least 6 months of bridge watchkeeping duties
  • Supervision by the master or qualified officer.


Medical Requirements

Maritime students have additional health requirements that ordinary tertiary students may not have.

NMIT states that applicants must provide a current:

  • Medical examination certificate issued by a GP,
  • Seafarers Medical Certificate, or
  • Equivalent medical certificate.

The certificate must generally be no more than two years old before commencing specified maritime safety courses.

The relevant courses include:

  • STCW Medical First Aid
  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
  • STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats.


Eyesight and Medical Fitness

Students should understand that meeting NMIT's academic admission requirements does not automatically mean they will qualify for the final MNZ Certificate of Competency.

MNZ has separate requirements concerning:
