Why Study / Key Benefits
- The Postgraduate Diploma in Science (PGDipSc) allows students with an appropriate science background to undertake advanced and in-depth study in a chosen science subject.
- UC offers more than 20 subject areas through the qualification, allowing students to develop a focused area of expertise.
- Some of the available subjects are primarily postgraduate-level fields, providing opportunities for advanced specialisation.
- The programme is primarily coursework-based, although selected subjects can include independent projects or research-related work.
- It can be used as preparation for further postgraduate study, particularly the Master of Science and, in appropriate cases, doctoral study.
- The qualification can also strengthen specialist scientific knowledge for employment and professional development.
Programme Structure and Subjects / Topics
The PGDipSc is a flexible qualification in which the student selects a recognised Science subject and completes 120 points according to that subject's regulations.

Examples of the 2026 structure include:
Astronomy:
- Students select the prescribed Astronomy/Physics courses, with options including ASTR421–427, ASTR430, PHYS401–460, MDPH403 and MDPH406.
- Some course combinations have limits on the number of higher-level Physics courses.
- Subject to approval, some courses may be replaced with suitable courses from another subject.
Biochemistry:
- 120 points of 400-level BCHM, CHEM or BIOL courses.
- Must include either BIOL411 and BIOL412, or CHEM430 and CHEM431.
- Specific 300-level Biochemistry, Chemistry and Biology preparation is required.
Biological Sciences:
- At least 120 points including BIOL411 and BIOL412.
- At least 60 points from other 400-level BIOL courses.
- Remaining courses require appropriate School approval.
Biotechnology:
- At least 120 points including BIOL411, BIOL412 and BIOL496.
- At least 45 points from specified advanced biotechnology/molecular bioscience courses.
Chemistry:
- CHEM430 and CHEM431.
- Plus 90 points from CHEM432–438.
- Up to 30 points can be replaced with suitable 400-level Science courses with approval.
Computer Science:
- 120 points from specified 400-level COSC, SENG and DATA courses.
- Up to 30 points may be replaced with another subject with approval.
- Students considering progression to the MSc in Computer Science need to take COSC469.
Data Science:
- Eight courses from approved COSC, DATA, MATH, STAT and SENG lists.
- At least 30 points must come from prescribed COSC/SENG courses.
- A further 30 points must come from prescribed Mathematics/Statistics courses.
Environmental Science:
- ENVR411 and ENVR415.
- Plus 90 points of relevant courses selected from areas such as Biology, Chemistry, Data Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Forestry, Geography, Geology, Health, Mathematics, Statistics and Water Science.
- The programme must form a coherent thematic programme and receive approval.
Geology:
- 120 points from GEOL471–499.
- Up to 45 points from another relevant subject can replace Geology courses with approval.
- Practical and fieldwork may be required.
Mathematics:
- Eight courses from MATH401–490 and STAT401–490, excluding MATH449 and STAT449.
- Normally at least six courses are Mathematics courses.
Medical Physics:
- Seven courses from MDPH401–410.
- One course from PHYS410–460.
- One course may be replaced with an appropriate subject with approval.
Microbiology:
- At least 120 points including BIOL411, BIOL412, BIOL455 and BIOL456.
- At least 30 additional points must come from specified advanced Biology/Biochemistry courses.
Physics:
- Either PHYS480 plus six approved Physics/Astronomy/Medical Physics courses, or eight approved courses from the specified list.
- Limits apply to the number of higher-level Physics courses.
Statistics:
- Eight courses from STAT401–490 and MATH401–490, excluding STAT449 and MATH449.
- Normally at least six courses are Statistics courses.
- Additional requirements apply if the student has not previously completed the specified Statistics prerequisites.

Latest Updates / Special Requirements
- The current 2026 PGDipSc regulations came into force on 1 January 2026.
- The formal maximum completion period is 60 months.
- Students who fail more than 30 points will be withdrawn from the qualification unless the applicable rules provide otherwise.
- Courses normally cannot be repeated unless an exemption is granted by the Executive Dean of Science or delegate.
- Students can potentially transfer their completed PGDipSc into the Master of Science with approval.
- Students completing PGDipSc Computer Science with at least a B GPA may have pathways into the Professional Master of Computer Science or Master of Artificial Intelligence, subject to approval and the relevant programme requirements.
- Course availability is not guaranteed every year; some subjects specifically state that not all courses will be offered in every academic year.
- Laboratory, fieldwork or other practical requirements may apply depending on the specialisation.
- Subject-specific prerequisites are important and should be checked before an international applicant submits an application.
International Student Visa Requirements
For an international student coming to New Zealand to study the PGDipSc on campus, the relevant visa will generally be the New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa, subject to Immigration New Zealand's assessment.
Current INZ information states:
- Visa cost: from NZ$850.
- Maximum stay: up to 4 years.
- Processing: 80% within 8 weeks.
- An offer of place from an approved education provider is required.
- Students must have sufficient funds to pay tuition fees or an acceptable scholarship.
- Students must demonstrate sufficient living funds or have an acceptable sponsor.
- Acceptable insurance is required.
- Applicants must satisfy the applicable visa requirements, including health and character requirements.
