Foundations Skills (Level 2)

The Foundations Skills (Level 2) course at NZIS is an introductory programme designed for people who love sport, fitness and recreation but aren’t yet ready for higher-level study. It helps you build core skills for study, work readiness, personal confidence and industry understanding with lots of practical activity — not just classroom work.

Purpose of the Course

  • Introduces the sport, recreation and fitness industries.

  • Develops study skills, confidence and self-management.

  • Gives hands-on learning: outdoor activities, gym sessions, field trips and community projects.

  • Helps you prepare for higher-level study (e.g., Level 3) at NZIS.

Course Structure & Topics

While NZIS does not publicly list a subject timetable like a university, the programme broadly includes:

  • Study readiness and confidence building skills
  • Work-readiness skills (e.g., CV writing, teamwork)
  • Self-management and personal development
  • Community projects and cultural awareness experiences
  • Practical, sport-related activities and field trips

Career Outcomes

This course is not primarily designed for job placement; its main purpose is to prepare you for further study. Typical next steps after completion:

  • Entry into Level 3 sport, recreation or related NZIS courses.
  • Improved confidence and readiness for workplace or further vocational training.
  • Introductory experience in sport, fitness and recreation.

International Student Notes

  • As of the latest NZIS information, this Foundations Skills (Level 2) course is not open to international student enrolments.

  • For an international student looking to study in New Zealand with NZIS, currently Diploma Level 5 and Level 6 sport & exercise programmes are the options available.
