Sport, Recreation & Exercise (Level 3)

The New Zealand Certificate in Sport, Recreation and Exercise (Level 3) at NZIS is an 18-week vocational qualification that gives you a broad foundation in sport, fitness, recreation and event support skills. It’s designed to help you develop real-world capabilities you can use across sport clubs, recreation centres and community programmes.

However — and this is important for international students — this specific Level 3 course is currently only available to domestic New Zealand students (citizens or residents) and not open to international student enrolments at this time.

Programme Structure / Subjects Covered

The course combines practical and theoretical learning, including:

  • Exercise programming — designing basic fitness plans.

  • Personal fitness development — understanding your own fitness.

  • Sport event planning & organisation — how to set up events.

  • Sport nutrition basics — fundamentals of athlete wellbeing.

  • Coaching skills & leadership development — practical coaching and team support.

  • Health, wellness and injury management basics — safe participation principles.

Disciplines / Specialisations Offered

At Level 3, the course does not offer formal “specialisations” — instead it gives you a broad grounding across sport, recreation and exercise support. You choose specialisations at higher levels (Level 5/6, Diploma).
