Master of Laws Level 9

The Auckland University of Technology Master of Laws (LLM) is a specialised postgraduate law degree designed for graduates and legal professionals who want to deepen their expertise in advanced legal research, international law, criminal justice, corporate law, intellectual property, environmental law and other specialist legal areas. The programme is flexible and can be completed through coursework, dissertation, thesis, or a combination of research and taught papers.

Programme Structure / Study Options

Students can choose from multiple pathways:

1. Master of Laws by Thesis

Options include:

  • 120-point thesis (approximately 40,000 words)
    OR
  • 90-point thesis plus 30 points of coursework

2. Master of Laws by Dissertation

Includes:

  • 60-point dissertation
  • 60 points of coursework

3. Master of Laws by Coursework

Includes:

  • 120 points from taught postgraduate law courses

Compulsory Requirement

Legal Research Methodology

A compulsory zero-point research preparation course for all postgraduate law students.
