Engineering Maths Summer School – Overview

The Engineering Maths Summer School is a short bridging course designed to help learners meet the mathematics entry requirement needed for acceptance into engineering diploma programmes at Otago Polytechnic (such as Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering).

Why Study Engineering Maths Summer School?

Many engineering programmes require NCEA Level 2 Mathematics as part of entry criteria. If you meet all other requirements for a diploma but lack sufficient maths credits, this course helps you gain equivalent skills and knowledge to qualify.

Benefits:

  • Builds a strong foundation in mathematics specifically for engineering contexts.

  • Helps secure eligibility for engineering diploma programmes at Otago Polytechnic.

  • Small group and face-to-face learning with practical exercises.

Course Subjects / Topics

The curriculum covers Introductory Mathematics for Engineers drawn from existing bridging courses. It includes a blend of mathematics topics that start from Level 1 and build up to Level 3 skills.

Core mathematical focus:

  • Algebra 2

  • Algebra 3

  • Introductory Mathematics for Engineers

  • Group problem exercises + independent work

Disciplines / Related Programmes

The Summer School acts as a preparatory course for entry into the following engineering pathways:

  • New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil)

  • New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical)

  • New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical)

Highlights

  • Intensive focused preparation helps you meet engineering entry requirements.
  • Builds confidence in core mathematics in a supportive group setting.
  • Taught by Otago Polytechnic instructors familiar with engineering pathways.
  • Offers a clear pathway into practical engineering studies.

Career Outcomes (Pathway)

While the Summer School itself is not a qualification, it supports entry into engineering diplomas that lead to entry-level careers like:

  • Engineering technician roles

  • Assistant engineer positions

  • Technical support roles in civil, mechanical, or electrical fields

  • Foundation for further engineering study or higher qualifications

Visa Requirements (International Students)

  • If you plan to enter New Zealand physically to attend this course on campus in Dunedin, you must apply for a New Zealand student visa (unless your stay is very short and you are eligible for a visitor visa).

  • Short intensive courses may qualify for limited-duration visas if your total stay is short and meets immigration policies.

  • For stays of more than 3 months, a formal student visa is typically required.
Check eligibility and apply via Immigration New Zealand or consult Otago Polytechnic’s International Office for support.
