RMIT’s geospatial science team is the leading research group in Australia.

You will be expertly supervised as you develop your analytical, computing, modelling and problem-solving skills through further investigation into one of our key areas:

  • cartography and visualisation

  • earth observation and unmanned aerial systems

  • 3D building modelling, digital twins and augmented reality (AR)

  • land management and governance

  • geodesy

  • GeoAI, GIS, machine learning and geoinformatics

  • remote sensing, laser sensing and aerial surveying  

  • satellite positioning, multi-GNSS positioning and GNSS ionosphere sensing

  • space weather and its effects on GNSS

  • visual positioning systems and indoor localisation

  • hydrographic surveying.

Research collaborations

  • RMIT has a joint relationship with the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Geospatial science PhD candidates who complete their program under this arrangement spend time studying in both Melbourne and the Netherlands, graduating with a double-badged qualification.
  • Additionally, there are collaborations with other national and international institutes, centres, groups and partners, including RMIT’s Space Industry Hub, Centre for Information and Discovery and Data Analytics (CIDDA).
